Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (scraping / graston)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a form of manual therapy. There are many types of IASTM. Generally, the techniques are differentiated by the type of instrument used. Graston, Gua Shaw, and Hawkins Grip are examples of IASTM instruments.

Benefits of Scraping/Graston Technique

  • Improve scar tissue mobility
  • Decrease muscle tension
  • Promote blood flow
  • Decrease pain
  • Improve motion
  • Reduce tension in muscle knots / trigger points

How can IASTM help?

IASTM is an integrative manual therapy where a tool is used to work muscles and break up scar tissue. Another term for IASTM is “scraping”. This form of treatment is very useful for any previous soft tissue injuries. It has been shown to improve scar tissue mobility, decrease muscle tension, and promote blood flow. Each of these results can decrease pain and improve the function of injured regions. Here is a peer-reviewed article showing the effectiveness, mechanisms, and practical use of IASTM.
