What is Trigger Point Dry Needling?
During this treatment, the practitioner uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate the target tissue beneath. The target tissues in this case are called trigger points or “knots” within a muscle or connective tissue. This is a great way to manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and limitations in range of motion. The needle will create a local twitch response within the target muscle allowing the trigger point to release. Multiple trigger points within the same muscle or different muscles can be treated during the same visit. No medication of any kind is injected during the treatment, hence the name “dry” needling
Is it the same as Acupuncture?
This technique is not the same as acupuncture. Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine. It is a holistic treatment that follows specific protocols that differ from trigger point dry needling and can have different effects on your body.
What are the benefits of Trigger Point Dry Needling?
Trigger point dry needling will help decrease muscle tension, decrease neuromusculoskeletal pain, and help increase range of motion. Most patients will require 3-6 treatments to maximize its effects, but some patients will see large improvements just after the first visit. This technique is a great option to try if other soft tissue techniques have been ineffective.
